How Putting Yourself First Can Make You a Better Person

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Putting yourself first is NOT selfish, it can actually make you a much better person.

Imagine what you could accomplish if you put yourself first.

Between work, workouts, meal planning, family, and friends, there is very little time left in the day for the most important thing—YOU. Putting yourself first can be challenging, mostly because we never seem to make it a priority.

Why is that?

Make your health a priority

Being the best version of yourself takes time, dedication, and intention. We all have excuses why we can’t put ourselves first. I get it, I’ve done it and still find myself not putting myself first. We start out with the best of intentions and start making a little progress with taking care of ourselves but ultimately, “life gets in the way” and we slip back and forget about taking care of ourselves and everyone else comes first.

Self-Care

Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s time to be a little selfish, it’s okay.

It’s time to put yourself first. You have to be the best version of YOU in order to take care of everyone else around you.

When it comes to your health, if you don’t put yourself first, your body will certainly kick in and force you to! You don’t want to wait until it’s too late.

I know that with health and fitness it’s often difficult to give yourself permission to be selfish when society tells us it’s not a priority. Uhh, I’m telling you it pretty much MUST be a priority.

Let me ask you this….What do you think would actually happen if you did start taking care of yourself first?

Do you thing your spouse would leave you? Do you think you would lose your job? Do you think your kids would miss you or not survive?

Seriously, if you actually put your health and fitness first, you might actually notice that you feel much better, more confident, more energetic and more deserving. The people around you will learn to respect that you’ve made this a priority and they may even want to join you in your health and fitness journey.

You have to make YOU important. So how do you do that?

Here are a few helpful tips in putting yourself first with your health and fitness.

Set SMART goals:  So often we don’t set goals for ourselves at all or we set goals without specific, actionable steps or outcomes. When setting healthy goals, make sure they are SMART goals.

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Timely

Then work on turning these goals into healthy, sustainable habits.

Wake up a little earlier: Give yourself some YOU time. Set aside a little time each day to fit in your workouts. This extra time every day may be just what you need to feel grounded before starting your day.

Find a support group or workout buddy:  Pick a person who encourages you to prioritize you and your goals—this may be a partner, friend or life coach. In my Healthy Living Group the ladies are very supportive of each other and they encourage each other to be the best version of themselves.

Self-care

When you can put yourself first you’ll notice life seems a little bit more joyful. When you are at your happiest, you are at your most helpful to those around you. This is what happens when you put yourself first and you are at your best.  Don’t feel guilty about it, you are able to show up more for others when you start showing up for yourself first.

So don’t be afraid to clear your schedule for YOU, don’t be afraid to love you! After all, you are pretty flipping awesome.
