Making Time for Yourself Part 2: Creating Rituals

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Rituals are daily consistent actions you take that help you build habits over time. Our daily actions are what create our life, so by creating nourishing and supportive routines, we are choosing to fuel our days with power and purpose. Rituals are the secret to productivity and getting things done more efficiently.

It’s up to you to create positive rituals that define you and who you want to be. It all comes down to how you start out your day. You are responsible for taking the actions to shape your life and that starts out by how you shape your thoughts. beliefs and emotions. Your rituals offer you compassionate discipline where you focus your attention and energy on achieving a certain feeling. They will ground you regardless of what’s happening around you.

Sometimes, what you do with in the first hour of waking up can shape your day. It’s wise to start your day with a killer morning ritual to effectively power your day. Great morning rituals can even shape the decisions you make and the actions you take for the remainder of the day.

The idea is to develop a set of empowering rituals that will help you stay focused and motivated. I’m going to let you in on how and why I started my own morning ritual.

I while back I read this AWESOME book called The Miracle Morning by by Hal Elrod. WOW!! I was amazed at how badly I needed to get my butt into a daily ritual. I am far from a morning person. SERIOUSLY, I’d like mornings better if they started later.

I realized after reading The Miracle Morning how waking up ON PURPOSE can give you a huge sense of empowerment. No joke, all these little things you do daily will define you.

SO, why did I start setting myself up with a morning ritual? I wanted to get more $#!+ done. I was amazingly surprised at the sense of accomplishment I got after jumping my butt out of bed a little earlier.

Here’s how my morning goes…My alarm goes off about 5:40 A.M. I SHUT IT OFF IMMEDIATELY. About 2 minutes later, my alarm goes off on my phone, which is in the kitchen, so I have no choice but to get up and shut it off. My day has begun.

I stretch out a little and take a few deep breaths then I walk down stairs and get my workout on. Some people do this and sleep in their workout clothes, me, I just workout in my P.J’s. this sets the tone for my day. After working out, I make my coffee and sit and listen to Personal Development, which REALLY gets me energized. I take notes and read and re-read them on a daily basis. Again, I am shaping my day into a positive direction. This is my ME time, before the rest of the house is awake and I LOVE IT!!

It’s all up to you on how you shape your day. Will you be one who keeps hitting snooze every 7 minutes or will you be the one who jumps out of bed with a purpose each day? I feel such accomplishment once I have done those 2 things that I know my day will follow suit. I know I rule my day when I do things this way. I don’t have to worry about feeling rushed or stressed because I have set my day up by repeating these simple little rituals each day.

In The Miracle Morning, Hal talks about how you can create an AWESOME Daily ritual that you can get done in a hot minute and the rest of your day will go so much smoother. It’s all up to you to create our habits that shape us.

Here is an example of his 6 minute morning. Now, you can actually do this in 6 minutes or in a 30 to 60 minute window. It’s all up to you.

Imagine that the first six minutes of every morning begins like this….

via Hal Elrod

Minute One… (Silence)

Imagine waking up in the morning, and instead of rushing carelessly into your hectic day—feeling stressed and overwhelmed—imagine that you instead spend the first minute sitting in purposeful Silence. You sit, very calm, very peaceful, and you breathe deeply, slowly. Maybe you say a prayer of gratitude to appreciate the moment, or pray for guidance on your journey. Maybe, you decide to try your first minute of meditation. As you sit in silence, you’re totally present in the now, in the moment. You calm your mind, relax your body, and allow all of your stress to melt away. You develop a deeper sense of peace, purpose, and direction…

Minute Two… (Affirmations)

You pull out your daily Affirmations—the ones that remind you of your unlimited potential and your most important priorities—and you read them out loud from top to bottom. As you focus on what’s most important to you, your level of internal motivation increases. Reading over the reminders of how capable you really are, gives you a feeling of confidence. Looking over what you’re committed to, what your purpose is, and what your goals are re-energizes you to take the actions necessary to live the life you truly want, deserve, and now know is possible for you…

Minute Three… (Visualization)

You close your eyes, or you look at your vision board, and you visualize. Your Visualization could include your goals, what it will look and feel like when you reach them. You visualize the day going perfectly, see yourself enjoying your work, smiling and laughing with your family, or your significant other, and easily accomplishing all that you intend to accomplish for that day. You see what it will look like, you feel what it will feel like, and you experience the joy of what you will create…

Minute Four… (Scribing)

Imagine, pull out your journal, and in your journal, you take a minute to write down what you’re grateful for, what you’re proud, and the results you’re committed to creating for that day. Doing so, you put yourself in an empowered, an inspired, and confident state of mind.

Minute Five… (Reading)

Then, you grab your self-help book and invest one miraculous minute reading a page or two. You learn a new idea, something that you can implement into your day. You discover something new that you can use to feel better—to be better.

Minute Six… (Exercise)

Finally, you stand up and you spend the last minute, doing jumping jacks for 60 seconds and getting your heart rate up and getting energized and waking yourself up and increasing your ability to be alert and to focus.

How would YOU feel if that’s the 6-minute you started your day with? How would the quality of your day—your life—improve?
