Hyperthyroidism and Beyond, My Story

Did you know that millions of people, females especially suffer from thyroid issues and don’t even really realize it.

I’m about to tell you a little bit of my thyroid story and where it all began over 20 years ago and where I am with it all today so follow along with my series over the next few days to hear all about it.

A little over 20 years ago, I was diagnosed with a goiter and hyperthyroidism. What does that mean? Well a goiter is an enlarged thyroid and hyperthyroidism is when your thyroid is giving off too much T3 and T4 ( hormones).

Your thyroid is a gland in your neck that stores and produces hormones that affect the function of pretty much EVERY organ in your body. It regulates your metabolic rate and is associated with small changes in body weight and energy levels.

SO how did I figure out I had all of these little issues? My mom noticed my neck looked swollen, she had 80% of her thyroid removed at a young age so she was familiar with it all. This prompted me to go see a doctor and have some labs drawn only to confirm what we pretty much already knew, My thyroid was overactive!!

What were my signs and symptoms? My eyes were bugging out, enlarged thyroid, sweating A LOT, weight loss, hand shakes and nervousness, racing heart rate. These are only a few of the signs someone can display with an overactive thyroid, there are many more but these were the ones I had and they were NOT too much fun.

So I get put on thyroid and heart meds at the young age of 20 to get things under control.
