How Sleep Can Affect Your Weight

It’s true, lack of sleep can affect your weight. If you’re having trouble sleeping at night, it may contribute to a little bit of weight gain not to mention a few other health issues. Sleep can REALLY affect your weight.

You can be doing everything right with your diet and exercise, but if you’re surviving every day on only 3 hours of sleep and 5 cups of coffee, you’re sabotaging yourself. For anyone trying to lose weight or just get healthier, a chronic sleep debt is a giant eraser scrubbing away at all those healthy choices you’re making with your diet. THIS, right here, was pretty much what I was doing.

When you don’t sleep enough, your cortisol levels rise. This is the stress hormone that is frequently associated with fat gain. Cortisol also activates reward centers in your brain that make you want food. At the same time, the loss of sleep causes your body to produce more ghrelin.

Think about the last time you had a bad night of sleep. How did you feel when you woke up? Exhausted. Dazed. Confused. Maybe even a little grumpy?

When you’re sleep-deprived, your hunger hormones get wacky, signaling your brain to eat more food. Put the two together, and it’s no wonder sleep deprivation leads to overeating and extra pounds. Can you say late night binges!!

We NEED sleep so our bodies can recharge and recover overnight. Sleep is how your body repairs overnight. How much you sleep and how well you sleep has a direct impact on your health. You sleep can affect your eating and exercise habits.

I would go to bed, flip around like a fish out of water, over think things and get all worked up only to get back out of bed about 45 minutes later. I would lay on the couch watching TV and then stumble into bed around the time my husbands alarm would go off in the morning. I’d wake up feeling like I had been hit by a truck. There were times at night when I couldn’t sleep that I would of course eat, did NOT help one bit.

I tried taking over the counter sleep aid only to fall asleep as thought I were drunk and wake up feeling hung over. That wasn’t the way I wanted to sleep!! I wanted to slowly drift off and be calm and sleep soundly. Wasn’t happening with the over the counter pills. I even noticed that my eating habits had turned to CRAP and there was just a “little” weight gain going on.

Now, I could blame it all on the stress and anxiety going on in my life. Things can get pretty crazy in our lives. I do believe though, it’s all a matter of how we deal with this stress. It was like my mind couldn’t shut off at night in order for me to relax enough to fall asleep. And, forget it if I would happen to wake up halfway through the night.

Let me tell you, fixing poor sleep can be tough BUT I am so glad I have found my solution. I actually found a NATURAL remedy to help me. I can’t believe it took me this long to find something that works but I am so glad I did. My sleep patterns  are way better, I can fall asleep easily, I wake up feeling refreshed AND I have even noticed that my eating habits are better. I don’t have crazy cravings, or night time binges.
