We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

SO when starting a weight loss and fitness program most people want to know: What should I eat to lose weight and what exercises should I be doing to Lose weight and tone up?

First and foremost, I’m going to tell you, don’t go on a “diet”. You can’t go eating cabbage soup and lose weight, it just doesn’t work that way. That’s right, I said it, going on a diet is the biggest mistake you can make.

Why? Because most diets are not based on sound nutritional principles, are hard to follow, and most of all, make no long term plan for maintaining your weight loss. In most cases, people who go on a diet,  eventually go off the diet and do what? Go right back to the eating habits that caused the weight gain in the first place. Besides, some of these diet ideas are way out there.

Here’s a great rule to live by: If you can’t see yourself on this “diet” in one, two or three years, then it’s not right for you. You can’t get long term results with quick fix gimmicks. You actually have develop long-term, healthy eating habits.

So if going on a diet doesn’t work, what does? The answer is to make healthy lifestyle changes you can live with. Remember, balance is the key.  You actually need to gain an understanding of what you should eat will lead you to make better choices. also, what works for one may not work for another, everyone is different. I’ve worked with so many people and we have worked hard at finding what works for each individual and worked on making it a permanent lifestyle change they can live with.

So, what workouts should you be doing as a beginner at fitness? How do you actually START working out?

Well, again, that depends on your fitness goals along with your current fitness level. When beginning any exercise program, it’s important to pace yourself and not risk injury by overexerting yourself right out of the gate– especially if it’s been a while since you worked out.

Here are my tips on starting an exercise program:

Start out slow and be sure to listen to your body. Don’t go out there and start exercising 5 days a week for hours at a time. That’s just a recipe for disaster. You may hurt yourself and then be discouraged and give up all together. You want to be sure to give your body a few days of rest and recovery.

Don’t be afraid to ask someone if you at a gym. That’s what the staff and trainers are for. Most people are confused the first time they walk into a gym, I sure the heck was,  but are afraid of asking for advice. But if that’s you, it’s time to get over it.

Find out what works best for you and stick with it for a while until you start feeling comfortable with things and then switch it up a bit. You want variety so you don’t get bored. Try out a class, do an online workout, keep it simple but keep it fun.
